Results of Desertification Control

The project will not only aim to plant Salix in the sand, but also to build this barren land into a national "eco-energy forest base."

In the winter of 2006, Inner Mongolia Maowusu Biomass Cogeneration Co. Ltd. began explorations into sand control and forestation in Uxin Banner.  It invested 80 million yuan to build a 600 thousand acre eco-shrubbery under the business model “enterprise + raw material forest base = household farming and grazing”.  In order to let local farmers and herdsmen participate in sand control to build a better home, the project actively organized local herders to plant Salix. Currently 150 local residents have signed a lease contract which leases 36 acres of land for 400 to 1,000 people to plant Salix. The project also provides planting, harvesting and other tools for the farmers. By subsiding, the farmers are responsible for the management and protection of the Salix. Once the Salix has matured, 3 to 5 years later, and is ready to be harvested, the Salix is purchased at an appropriate price from the farmers.

So far, the project has resulted in an increase of ground cover with over 42,000 acres now covered in vegetation.  Previously the project had invested 30 million yuan in 2010 which resulted in 130 thousand mu of ground cover.  The project expects to invest 30 million yuan in the re-vegetation of a 42,000 acre ecological forest and overall 26 million mu for the management of desertification.  This will account for a 2% reduction of the national “Eleventh Five-Year” in 2013, creating an environmentally friendly green industry road.
